A check-engine code is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The "P0420 — catalytic converter" code people read at the parts store is almost never a bad cat. It is usually upstream sensors, exhaust leaks, or fuel mixture. Real diagnosis takes time, the right scan tools, and a tech who has seen the problem before.

Why is there a charge for diagnostics?
AutoZone reads the code for free in 30 seconds. Actual diagnosis — figuring out what is causing the code — takes time with the right tools. That is what we charge for, and we apply the fee to the repair if you go ahead with it.
Is a flashing check-engine light urgent?
Yes. A flashing CEL means active misfire, which damages the catalytic converter fast. Get it in same day if you can.
Will you tell me what is wrong even if I fix it elsewhere?
Yes. Once we diagnose, the answer is yours either way.
What scan tools do you use?
Factory-level Snap-on and Autel, plus OEM-specific tools for the brands we see most. The right tool matters — cheap scanners miss data.
Can you diagnose intermittent issues?
Yes, but they take longer because we sometimes have to drive the vehicle to reproduce the problem. We will tell you upfront if that is the case.
